What is interior design?

What is interior design? When you think of interior design, what comes to mind? The color schemes, the furniture placement, or maybe even how clean your home feels.

Interior design is the art of arranging the inside of a building to meet the needs of its occupants. It can be designing both commercial spaces or residential spaces.

Unfortunately, many people think that it is all about color selection and furniture rearrangement.

They are not aware that our profession encompass a lot of technical complexity.

Interior design definition may vary from person to person, but it is a challenge and complex process to meet client’s needs, and achieve project goals in terms of quality, time and budget.

Additionally, interior designers have legal responsibility regarding to their work and its impact on their clients and the general public as well.

What is interior design?

There is no answer for this question better than the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) definition about the profession according to the followings:

It is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built environment.

These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically attractive.

Designs are created in response to and coordinated with the building shell, and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project.

Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements, and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability.

Work Process

The work process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology.

It include research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process.

Whereby, the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce a space that fulfills the project goals.

Scope of Services

The scope of services performed by a professional design practitioner. They are qualified by means of education, experience, and examination. Their focus is to protect and enhance the life, health, safety and welfare of the public.

Conclusion:

Interior design is all about how we experience spaces, and it’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal.
